CBK Details Anti-Counterfeiting Efforts

The Central Bank of Kosovo (CBK) has released details of its efforts to fight counterfeit currency, noting that it had successfully coordinated inter-institutional meetings to design and implement effective strategies to combat the circulation of counterfeit coins, especially €2 coins.

It detailed several actions – such as the removal of coin deposit fees, ensuring new coin supply through commercial banks, and regulatory changes to cross-border coin transport – that enabled the central bank to withdraw a ‘significant amount’ of counterfeit coins from circulation.

Around 47,168 suspected counterfeit €2 coins were detected and withdrawn from circulation between December 2023 and March 2024, with the bank supplying around 6.75 million coins into circulation through commercial banks, without applying a fee, during the period. ‘This commitment has contributed to reducing the circulation of fake coins, facilitated identification and raised public awareness of this issue’, said the Bank.
