Royal Canadian Mint Reaches New Heights for the New Year
The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) has released several coins in varying designs and denominations to commemorate the Year of the Dragon. Amongst these are a 1kg gold coin with an extremely limited mintage and a pair of silver and gold coins featuring Extraordinarily High Relief (EHR).
The 1kg gold coin features a highly detailed depiction of the Chinese Zodiac’s most powerful animal sign, the Dragon, on the reverse, amid auspicious cherry blossoms and clouds. The dragon is depicted holding a Dragon Pearl, or Fire Ball, representing wisdom and bearing the Chinese character ‘龍’ (‘Dragon’) in the Yan script calligraphy style.
The Susanna Blunt effigy of the late Queen Elizabeth II features on the reverse of the coin, with four pearls depicted below the portrait and between the Queen’s dates of reign, symbolising the four effigies that have appeared on Canadian coins.
