IMD-TC Updates Guidelines for Plated and Clad Coins

The International Mint Directors’ Technical Committee (IMD-TC) has published updated guidelines regarding quality assurance for circulation coins, with particular focus on characteristic features of plated and clad blanks and coins. The guidelines aim to provide national authorities with support for tenders and even give mints guidelines for quality control of the blanks supplied before the minting process.

In its introduction to the update, the IMDTC noted that the guidelines published in 2017 contained a brief description of plated/clad blanks, with one page only dedicated to the topic. But as more and more blanks of this type are being used for cost reasons, the quality characteristics for circulation coins have been revised and specified. In addition, plating and cladding processes have been evolved in the meantime. The guidelines have accordingly been updated to a 16 page document.
