Zambia Set to Update Currency

The Bank of Zambia has announced the introduction of a new family of the Zambian currency. The new family of banknotes and coins will consist of six coins and six banknotes, and is scheduled for launch on 31 March 2025. New coin denominations include the 2 and 5 kwacha, in addition to the existing 5, 10 ngwee, and 50 ngwee, and 1 kwacha coins.

The design of the new currency draws inspiration from the country’s heritage, featuring elements that celebrate its unique flora and fauna and well-known waterfalls. By incorporating these elements, the new currency not only honours Zambia’s cultural heritage, said the central bank, but is intended to strengthen its role as a symbol of pride and unity for Zambian citizens. Although the designs for the new banknotes have been widely published, those for the coins have not yet been released.
