Appealing to a New Generation of Coin Collectors

The Mint Directors Association (MDA) held a webinar last month titled ‘Change For Coins: How to Harness the Passion of a New Generation of Collectors’. Hosted by e-commerce platform provider EQL, and featuring insights from the Royal Australian Mint (RAM), the webinar focused on collectibles and leveraging product launches to grow brand loyalty and optimise commercial opportunities.

While coin collecting is one of the world’s oldest hobbies, the needs and wants of collectors – and how to reach them – is ever evolving. Appealing to their unique motivations and preferences warrants a fresh approach, said the MDA. Hence this webinar on the topic.

EQL CEO and Co-Founder, Andrew Lipp, opened the webinar by commenting on the extensive history of coin collecting. Coin collecting is both a hobby for the ages, and for all ages. Collectors are motivated by a variety of drivers, with a survey conducted by EQL last year finding that happiness or enjoyment topped the list (70.1% of those surveyed), followed by collection expansion (12.1%), appreciation for quality (10.3%), personal taste and affection (5.2%), and investment or value (1.7%).
