Spanish Police Bust Counterfeiting Ring

Spain’s National Police have announced the raiding of a currency counterfeiting ring, following years of investigation. The organised crime ring has allegedly been circulating counterfeit €2 coins throughout Europe, with Spanish authorities busting a counterfeit workshop based in Toledo, central Spain.

Nearly half a million ‘high quality’ coins were brought onto the market in Europe, with the National Police working on the case for six years and collaborating with Europol to uncover the workshop. 10 people have been arrested following the bust, with the extensive investigation described as ‘extremely difficult and drawn out, not least because of the secretive nature of the organization, and also the near impossibility of being able to follow a trail, which is characteristic for forged coins’.
