Brazil Commemorates Dual Governing Bicentennial
Banco Central do Brasil has launched a commemorative silver coin to mark the 200th anniversary of the country’s first constitution and the creation of its legislative branch. Produced by Casa da Moeda do Brasil, the coins have a face value of R$5 with mintage restricted to an initial 3,000 pieces.
The obverse depicts an open book of the first Constitution, with a handwritten page coloured in sepia tones and a stylised quill pen leading to the script. ‘First Constitution’ and ‘Legislative Power’ are inscribed at the top and bottom of the coin, respectively.
The reverse of the coin features the architectural complex of the National Congress in the foreground with two sets of circles in the background representing the plenary sessions of the two Houses established by the first Constitution – the Federal Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.
