Held last October during the Gala Dinner at MDC 2023 in Ottawa, Canada, the MDC Awards paid tribute to a sometimes-underrepresented part of coin design when it comes to awards, namely ‘Best Packaging (of a collectible coin)’.

Coin & Mint News has previously covered the category winner, the Monnaie de Paris’s ‘2 KG Dior Trunk’ (see CMN October 2023), but now we look at the other two finalists – the Croatian Mint’s packaging for the numismatic set of commemorative gold coins ‘Hum and the Višnjan Observatory’, and US Mint’s packaging for its ‘Rocketship™’ coin set.

In 2022, the Croatian Mint produced the world’s smallest coin featuring the world’s smallest city, Hum, as part of its final commemorative kuna set before the country changed to the euro as its currency at the beginning of last year. The coin was part of a larger numismatic set, which also featured a 1 oz gold coin depicting a motif of the Višnjan Observatory (see CMN December 2022).
