Data and trends, managing circulation well, optimising specifications, and the role and value of coins were the key topics of the Currency Conference Coin workshop. Minting and circulating coins have challenges but a vibrant and bustling story was evident in all areas with much to discuss and debate.

Data and trends

Coin and banknote circulation data collected and analysed by Coin & Mint News™ and sister publication Currency News™ for a snapshot of 35 countries around the world suggested an overall softening of demand for coins.

Data for 2017 and 2018 reflected clear signs of reducing volumes with the pandemic creating a confused and highly variable situation from which it is hard to draw conclusions. 2022, with a data set of only 19 countries, saw a reduction but only time will tell what is really happening.
