New Danish Coins Enter Circulation

Danmarks Nationalbank (DNB) has begun issuing Denmark's new coins featuring the effigy or monogram of the current reigning monarch, King Frederik X. Development of the new coins began in January 2024, following the abdication of his mother Queen Margrethe II and the King’s subsequent accession to the throne.

DNB released a traditional ‘Passing of the Crown’ coin in November 2024, featuring portraits of the outgoing and incoming monarch on either side, created by sculptor Eva Hjorth. Eva Hjorth's portrait of King Frederik X has been used on the new circulation coins.

In January 2025, DNB signed an agreement with Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre – Real Casa de La Moneda (FNMT-RCM, or the Spanish Mint) to produce the new coins. The now closed Mint of Finland had been responsible for minting Danish coins since 2017, following the closure of the Royal Danish Mint in 2016, with the Passing of the Crown coin the last to be produced before the agreement expired and DNB initiated an EU tender to identify a new supplier of coins.
