Zambia Introduces Heritage Series Coins and Notes

The Bank of Zambia has begun issuing new families of both banknotes and coins, taking the opportunity to redefine the note/coin boundary with the introduction of higher value 5 and 2 kwacha (K) coins to supplement the four existing coins of K1 and 50, 10, and 5 ngwees (N). The currency showcases Zambia’s rich heritage, with its unique flora and fauna as the central theme; hence it is called the ‘Heritage Series’.

The series, which was officially launched on 31 March, now comprises six banknotes – K500, K200 (a new denomination), K100, K50, K20 and K10 – alongside the six coin denominations. This, says the Bank, is an optimal mix of notes and coins that will make cash transactions smoother and more convenient for businesses and individuals.
