New Coins for Central African States

The Bank of Central African States (BEAC) has released a new family of circulating coins for member countries of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC). This includes Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Republic of Congo.

The CFA franc coins follow a new banknote series issued in 2022. They have been produced as part of the central bank’s ongoing modernisation of cash payment methods and will co-circulate with the previous issue of 2006.

Nine coins have been issued, ranging from 1 franc to 500 francs and include – for the first time – a 200 franc coin. The BEAC has said that the new denomination ‘takes into account the evolving needs of consumers by offering greater flexibility in cash transactions’.
