BSP Anchors Stability and Sustainable Growth
The tagline for the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) Annual Report 2023 – ‘Anchoring Stability and Sustainable Growth amid Challenging Times’ – takes note of the inflationary challenges and other pressures that the Philippines faced last year. The report covers the usual remits of a central bank, including price and financial stability, efficient payments systems, and currency issuance. The latter will be of most interest to Coin & Mint News™ readers, and here we briefly summarise the changes (and continuances) in the Philippines’ coin production, issuance, circulation, and recirculation.
Production
Currency production deliveries from the BSP reached ₱10.3 billion worth of coins (1.8 billion pieces) in 2023, representing a 46.4% year-on-year increase.
To provide insurance against uncertainties and shocks, the BSP maintains a currency buffer stock that should be equivalent to one month’s worth of coins. The central bank noted that total coin inventory more than met this target, remaining sufficient to service the currency requirements of the economy for around three months.
