New Circulating Coins for France

Three of France’s circulating coins are being updated to honour three exceptional French women. The 10, 20, and 50 cent coins will bear the effigy of Simone Veil, Joséphine Baker, and Marie Curie, respectively, on the national side. The updates to these coins follows those made in 2022 to the €1 and €2 coins, and marks the first time that the national sides of the coins have been updated since France’s adoption of the euro as its currency.

Designed by Monnaie de Paris general engraver Joaquin Jimenez, each coin depicts a side profile of its respective honoured woman in the background, with the name of each woman inscribed vertically in the centre.

The focus of the new 10 cent coins is Simone Veil, a Holocaust survivor and women’s rights activist, and former politician. She fought for the legalisation of abortion as health minister and later became the first female President of the European Parliament in 1979.
