RCM On Track for Carbon Neutrality
The recent High Security Printing Latin America conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, played host to the Regional Banknote of the Year awards. In addition to the usual categories, a new ‘Environmental Project’ award was announced and presented.
Eight submissions were received prior to the awards ceremony, with the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM)’s three phase project to decarbonise its business one of these. The RCM has recently reported that it remains on track to achieve the goal of a carbon-neutral Circulation Business – including the Winnipeg facility – by 2030, with its Decarbonization Roadmap in place to improve the way that the Mint operates both of its facilities. Work is underway to achieve a carbon net-zero operation by 2050.
An important element of this project is the investment of C$4.8 million in a geoexchange energy system at its Winnipeg facility, which began operating in 2024. The project is a first in the industry but offers a solution that other mints could adopt.
