Special Relationship Unites Britannia and Liberty

The Royal Mint has partnered with the United States Mint in ‘a groundbreaking collaboration’ between the Chief Engravers of both mints to produce a design for the 2024 Britannia and Liberty commemorative coins.

‘Britannia’ is the flagship bullion coin from The Royal Mint (TRM) and features the national personification of Britain as a helmeted female warrior holding a trident and shield as its central motif. ‘Liberty’ is likewise an allegorical feature often utilised in the United States, with an ‘American Liberty’ figure appearing on US coinage in one form or another for over 230 years.

The two mints have created a new coin programme, collaborating on a design to merge the two symbols on one coin – with US Mint Chief Engraver Joseph Menna and TRM Chief Engraver Gordon Summers bringing Liberty and Britannia together on a coin for the first time.
